A lock of hair can be almost weightless, yet carry an entire chapter of someone’s life.
It may be the first hair saved from a child’s first haircut. A few strands shared between two people. The fur of a companion who grew old beside you. Or something kept after someone you love is no longer here.
Most of these keepsakes eventually find their way into an envelope, a drawer or a small box.
But can hair actually be turned into a diamond?
Yes. Through a carefully controlled process, carbon associated with a meaningful sample can be prepared for use in the creation of a laboratory-grown diamond.
At Helios Fine Jewelry, this is what we call a Life Diamond: a real laboratory-grown diamond created through a process that begins with something deeply personal.
How Can Hair Be Used to Create a Diamond?

The connection begins with carbon.
Diamond is a crystalline form of carbon. Human hair and pet fur also contain carbon as part of their organic composition.
For a Helios Life Diamond, the chosen sample is first carefully prepared before entering a controlled carbon extraction and purification process. The resulting carbon source is then prepared for the diamond-growth stage.
Rather than forming deep beneath the earth over geological time, the diamond is grown under controlled laboratory conditions.
The result is not a diamond imitation such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
It is a laboratory-grown diamond.
Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical composition, crystal structure and optical and physical properties as natural diamonds. What differs is their origin: one forms naturally within the earth, while the other is created using advanced diamond-growth technology.
For a Life Diamond, there is another difference.
Its story begins with you.
The Helios Life Diamond Journey
Every Life Diamond begins with a sample and ends with a finished stone that can be kept loose or transformed into a bespoke piece of fine jewelry.
1. Your Sample
The process begins with something meaningful.
Depending on the Life Diamond being created, this may include:
-
Human hair
-
A baby’s first lock of hair
-
Hair from two people combined to represent a shared story
-
Pet fur
-
Ashes
Because every order is personal, we confirm the appropriate sample requirements before production begins.
The sample is then carefully recorded and prepared for the next stage.
2. Purification and Carbon Preparation
Hair cannot simply be placed inside a diamond-growing machine.
It first needs to be cleaned, processed and purified under controlled conditions.
During this stage, the selected sample is prepared for carbon extraction. The carbon source obtained through the process is then further prepared for use in the Life Diamond creation journey.
For many clients, this is one of the most meaningful stages: something that might otherwise have remained hidden inside a keepsake box begins its transformation into a permanent gemstone.
3. Growing the Diamond
Helios Life Diamonds are created using CVD, or Chemical Vapor Deposition, diamond-growth technology.
In conventional CVD diamond growth, carbon-containing material is introduced into a controlled chamber. Energy activates the carbon-containing gas, allowing carbon atoms to accumulate on a diamond seed.
The diamond develops gradually, layer by layer.
This controlled growth process creates a genuine laboratory-grown diamond crystal that can later be cut and polished in the same way other gem-quality diamonds are prepared for jewelry.
Growing the rough diamond is only the beginning.
4. Cutting and Polishing
Once the required growth has been achieved, the rough diamond is carefully assessed before cutting.
Its proportions are planned to reveal the best possible balance of beauty, brilliance and finished carat weight.
The stone is then cut and polished into its final form.
Depending on the selected specification, a Life Diamond can be created in a range of classic diamond shapes and sizes.
A discreet girdle engraving may also be added to selected diamonds, allowing initials, a date or another meaningful inscription to become part of the stone.
5. Creating Your Jewelry
Some clients choose to keep their Life Diamond as a loose stone.
Others want to wear the memory.
Because Helios is first and foremost a fine-jewelry studio, a Life Diamond can become the centre of a bespoke piece created specifically around the finished stone.
It might become:
-
A pendant worn every day
-
A ring marking a relationship or anniversary
-
A delicate piece created from a child’s first hair
-
A memorial jewel kept close to the heart
-
An heirloom designed to pass from one generation to another
Rather than choosing jewelry first and forcing the diamond into it, we can design around the final proportions, meaning and story of each Life Diamond.
Is a Diamond Made From Hair a Real Diamond?
This is one of the first questions people ask us.
A Life Diamond is a laboratory-grown diamond, not a diamond simulant.
Laboratory-grown diamonds and natural diamonds share essentially the same fundamental diamond crystal structure and material properties.
The important distinction is their origin.
A natural diamond formed within the earth.
A laboratory-grown diamond was grown through a controlled technological process.
A Life Diamond adds a personal origin story to that process by beginning its journey with a meaningful sample supplied by the client.
For qualifying stones, independent diamond grading may also be arranged through recognised gemological laboratories.
Can You Make a Diamond From Baby Hair?
Yes. A child’s first lock of hair is one of the most meaningful samples families choose to preserve.
Traditionally, first hair may be placed inside a keepsake box, album or envelope.
A Life Diamond offers a different interpretation of the same tradition: transforming that tiny physical memory into something designed to last throughout the child’s life and potentially beyond it.
It can remain as a loose diamond until a future milestone or be set into jewelry for a parent to wear.

Can Pet Fur Be Turned Into a Diamond?
For many people, a pet is not simply an animal. They are part of the family.
Pet fur can also begin a Helios Life Diamond journey.
Some clients choose to preserve fur while their companion is still with them. Others keep a small amount as a memorial after saying goodbye.
The finished diamond can remain as a private keepsake or become part of a necklace, ring or other bespoke piece that can be worn close every day.
Can Hair From Two People Be Combined?
A Life Diamond does not have to represent only one person.
Meaningful strands can be combined to represent a shared relationship or chapter of life.
For example:
-
A married couple
-
Parent and child
-
Several generations of a family
-
Two people celebrating an anniversary
Instead of engraving two names onto an existing object, the story becomes part of the creation of the diamond itself.
For some couples, this offers a particularly personal alternative to a conventional anniversary jewel.
How Long Does a Life Diamond Take?
Creating a Life Diamond is not an instant process.
The journey includes sample preparation, carbon processing, controlled diamond growth, cutting, polishing and any selected personalization or jewelry production.
The exact timeline can vary according to the required diamond specification and final piece.
Before production begins, Helios will guide you through the expected process and estimated timeframe for your individual order.
This is intentionally a considered process.
Something created to carry a story for decades does not need to be rushed.
How Do I Know My Sample Is Handled Carefully?
Trust matters enormously when the material being entrusted to us cannot simply be replaced.
For Helios Life Diamond orders, key stages of the journey are documented from sample through to the completed diamond.
We believe transparency should be part of creating something this personal.
Before beginning an order, we can also walk you through the sample requirements, available diamond specifications, personalization choices and expected production journey so you understand what happens next.
What Can a Life Diamond Represent?
A Life Diamond does not need to begin with loss.
It can celebrate a beginning just as easily as it can preserve a memory.
It might mark:
A first chapter
A baby’s first lock of hair.
A shared life
Hair from two people creating one diamond.
A lifelong companion
Pet fur preserved in something designed to endure.
An anniversary
A personal alternative to a conventional anniversary stone.
A family story
A diamond created to become an heirloom.
A memory
Hair or ashes preserved after someone has passed.
There is no single reason to create one.
The meaning belongs to the person who carries it.
From Something Small, Something Lasting
Hair is fragile.
A diamond is not.
Perhaps that is part of what makes the idea so powerful.
Something small enough to disappear into an envelope can begin the journey toward a gemstone designed to be held, worn and eventually passed forward.
At Helios Fine Jewelry, every Life Diamond begins with a personal story and can end as something entirely your own — from a loose diamond with a discreet inscription to a bespoke piece of fine jewelry designed around it.
A memory, made eternal.
